Local security is straightforward. This is where you enable or disable the firewall, disable the monitor that keeps track of how long it has been since your last scan, update tracking and real-time scanning and protections. Online security covers Anti-Phishing, Anti-Spam, and Identity control. The parental controls on Total Security 2009 are one of the little features that are included with the software. They offer a wide range of settings and cover every user account on the system.

Another cute feature of BitDefender Total Security 2009 is the automatic scanning of devices you plug in, such as USB memory sticks or CD-Rs. A list of interesting additions, in other words.
The BitDefender Total Security 2009 user interface (UI) is largely unchanged – you get a choice of two; a basic, “big-button” dashboard to appeal to novices, and an advanced UI, for those who like to tweak. Either way, it’s easy enough to master.

The suite’s new look features a sparse main “dashboard” that shows overall status. If there are any issues affecting security, the dashboard offers not one but two buttons to fix all issues. Clicking either brings up a list of items to fix and lets you do so individually or all at once, which is much the same as what you’ll encounter with Norton Internet Security 2008 and Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. A list of tasks lets you check for updates or run a full or deep scan.

When it came to efficacy, BitDefender Total Security 2009’s ability to detect the various categories of malware is slightly unbalanced. The recent AV-Test.org test of security suites gave BitDefender an impressive 97.6 per cent detection score when it came to malware but only a so-so score of 87.8 per cent for spyware. This was more or less the same scores achieved by the 2008 version so detection rates haven’t improved. Its rivals have, however, moved on and you can get near 100 per cent scores from the likes of Avira and Avast.

There are also optimisation tools that include a disk defragmenter and registry scanner as well as backup, either to a disk or over the internet to round off what is an extremely impressive array of features. Everything is tied together very well and even in advanced mode it’s fairly straightforward to adjust settings and configure the firewall and protection levels for your PC.

BitDefender claims its proactive defense won’t slow you down noticeably, and we found that to be true. Our first full scan with BitDefender took 40 minutes; subsequent scans were much shorter since it does not scan unchanged files. This time is about average compared with the other suites we tested. Update speed was also average: Malware definitions come about once per hour, and BitDefender scores reasonably well on Virus Bulletin’s malware tests. [http://www.virusbtn.com/news/2008/09_02] However, it scored far below the others in spyware-catching performance, at only 88 percent, where others, such as Norton and Kaspersky, were in the range of 95 to 98 percent.

This is an impressive array of applications in itself, but what makes BitDefender so good as a whole is the way they are all so well integrated into a single suite and the minimal impact it all has on system performance.
While scans took a little longer than average, this is a small price to pay considering the advantages on offer and with the ‘Basic View’ being so effective at notifying you and helping you fix potential security risks, it makes BitDefender Total Security 2009 one of the best beginner-oriented ‘set and forget’ solutions we’ve seen yet.
