The gaming performance is good with 60fps frame rate in Unreal Tournament III at 1440 x 900 resolution. The processor and graphics card along with 4GB RAM ensure smooth gaming performance. The battery life of the laptop is a little above two hours on full throttle. This is disappointing as it features a 9-cell battery which holds a lot more juice.

With its shiny black plastic chassis, orange accents, and faux-carbon fiber trim, the P-172X FX looks virtually identical to the P-171XL FX. At 9.2 pounds (with a 9-cell battery), the machine is far from what most would consider portable, but gamers who frequent LAN parties will find it easy to transport for short trips.

The P-172X FX’s keys feel sturdy, are well spaced, and have good response; and the keyboard doesn’t dip when you start hitting the keys (except the flimsy multimedia shortcut keys) with mounting enthusiasm. Also, Gateway seems to have treated the keys to resist spills and the stray Cheetos crumb. Even the numeric keypad is large enough to use easily.

With as much power as the Gateway P172X FX has the 9-cell battery is a requirement and provides an ok battery life. The entire machine is very heavy, not something you will want to carry in a backpack all day for sure. However, if what you are after is a gaming machine that is portable and can be taken to and from the LAN party much easier than a full desktop the Gateway P172X FX is a fantastic option.

The P172X FX also comes complete with a LAN port and VGA out. As stated before, another plus is that the new system does not come bogged down with the useless HD DVD drive that accompanies the more expensive Gateway P-171XL FX. Another great feature is the slot load DVD player which allows users to enjoy the excellent aforementioned display capabilities while watching their favorite films. All of these features add to the P172X FX’s value by eliminating the need for tons of tangled wires and adapters. Of course it comes complete with Bluetooth wireless technology as well.
