The xw4600’s design isn’t about aesthetics – its mix of dull grey and black wouldn’t look out of place on an accountant’s desk. Where it excels is in the sheer amount that HP has managed to cram into its shell. The chassis has three external 5.25-inch bays, four internal 3.5-inch bays and an external 3.5-inch bay. Our test model had a 16x DVD±RW drive, a single 500GB hard drive, and a media card reader in the external drive bay – so you could easily add three more hard drives, or five if you converted the two spare 5.25-inch bays.

The xw4600′ s full-size ATX case is every bit as handsome as any of HP’ s other machines of recent years, though it is a bit narrower than the xw8400 and xw9300 that we’ ve reviewed in the past. Under the cover, you’ ll discover the many expansion slots: 3 PCI, 1 PCI Express x1, 1 PCI Express x8 and 2 PCI Express x16. Only one of the slots was occupied - the top PCIe x16 slot had an NVIDIA Quadro FX1700-based video card installed.

The front of the case has more of the stickers found everywhere else, cut around the more delicate features of the case design. Behind the grill rests a surprisingly good speaker. While I wouldn’t necessarily want to use the bonus speaker for extended music sessions, it’s fine for checking on items, listening to a podcast or most relevantly, being notified of any program alerts. Moreover, the front grill provide a necessary point of entry for airflow within the case that is funneled around drives, RAM and processor, then expelled from the back. The back of the case shows off the big fan vent and just how many options owners have for expansion. You can see the 80Plus logo in the upper left of the back of the machine; it shows that the power supply has been deemed above 80% efficient in most use cases.

When it comes to workstations the graphics card is key, and HP provides a range of options from the 2D-only Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 up to the Quadro FX 4600. Our machine came with a Quadro FX 3500 (an upper range card), giving enough 3D clout to comfortable manage responsive real-time shaded previews in the like of 3ds max.ISV certification - for not only the graphics subsystem but the machine as a whole - covers all the expected bases including Maya, Catia, Solidworks, 3ds and AutoCAD.
