After the initial 7-inch Celeron versions and the second wave of 9- and 10-inch Intel Atom-powered systems, we’re finally seeing the third wave of Netbook laptops–machines that take the basic concept of low-cost, low-power computing and start to add in useful extras and features largely missing from the until-now rather Spartan design philosophy of most Netbooks.

To accommodate the spacious keyboard, HP kept the same touchpad and buttons as on the 2133 Mini-Note. At 2.3 x 1.1 inches, the Mini 2140’s touchpad is very narrow, requiring more movement and backtracking than we would like. Also, HP retained the awkward vertical mouse buttons, which flank the touchpad. The touchpad has a button above it for turning it off completely and a dedicated scrolling bar, which was useful for moving through long Web pages.

From the outside, you can’t tell the Mini 2140 from its predecessor. The aluminum alloy finish, a glaring departure from the white lacquered designs of the Acer Aspire One, the MSI Wind, and the Lenovo IdeaPad S10, is what made the Mini-Note exceptional in the first place. The 2140, starting at 2.6 pounds (with the 3-cell battery), is slightly lighter than the 2133. It’s as heavy as the Mini 1000 (2.5 lbs) and the MSI Wind (2.6 lbs), and a bit heavier than the Acer Aspire One (2.1 lbs), the lightest in the netbook category.
