Dell summarizes its notebooks conceived primarily for the classic business sector under the name Latitude. Here, among other things, one differentiates between the E5xxx and the E6xxx models. Like the Lenovo Thinkpad R and T series, Dell offers the E5xxx series which concentrates on basic functions and mainly tries to score with an attractive price. In addition there are the models of the E6xxx, with its indestructible metal chassis and particularly extensive equipment which appeal to the rather advanced, quality-conscious customer, as well.

Dell’s choice of graphics card, a Nvidia Quadro NVS 160M with 256MB of dedicated GDDR3 video memory, is something of a surprise since you would normally associate this with a workstation, not a business notebook. However, it’s better than being stuck with the integrated graphics. Images are outputted to a rather impressive screen; the 15.4in display has a 1,440×900 pixel native resolution.

The black color makes the E6500 finally look elegant—like an efficient tool for a serious job. The only resemblance of the old, gray and silver days are the hinges and battery. However, in pursuit of the business look somebody went too far and made all the edges very sharp. You won’t cut your hand on the edges but placing your hands on the palmrest is not as comfortable as it should be. Additionally, the screen protective paddings are not placed around the lid (as in D610) but next to keyboard.

The laptop also comes with a much faster processor Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8GHz. It is one of the latest Intel chipset and is definitely faster than my current D620. Other than that, the laptop also comes with 2 GB of RAM. It is not enough since my current laptop has 4 GB of RAM. The good thing about this is that the laptop allows me to upgrade the memory up to 5 GB, as compared to the maximum of 4 GB most laptops have. The standard hard drive is 250 GB which is quite sufficient for a corporate laptop since most of us already have an external hard disk.

The cursor control system is twofold. A touchpad and a stick between the G, H and B keys are supplemented by four mouse buttons, two above and two below the touchpad. Below the touchpad a third button turns the stick into a left, right, up and down scroller; ideal for web browsing, though vertical and horizontal scrolling are also built into the touchpad.

The Latitude E series sees the launch of a new BIOS that’s comparatively high resolution and mouse controllable, and quite frankly, very nice. Dell wouldn’t elaborate on what powers it, so we resolved to pull the laptop apart and catch a glimpse at the BIOS chip. Despite our best efforts however, we were utterly thwarted by the Dell construction pixies, as we couldn’t figure out a way to completely remove the casing around the motherboard without breaking things.
