While HP claims that the Mini 2140 is partially aimed at the education market, its design will surely appeal to business travelers. It sports a brushed silver, all-aluminum lid and a solid magnesium alloy chassis (similar to the original 2133 Mini-Note). Making the netbook even more durable are its metal alloy hinges complete with hardened steel pin axles; HP claims this build can endure the closing and opening of the lid ten times a day for six years (or 25,000 cycles).

The Airstream-esque metal skin of HP’s earlier Mini 2133 and EliteBook models carries over to the Mini 2140. The casing looks and feels fantastic and makes the Mini 2140 lighter and more impervious to scratches than plastic-bodied models. Measuring 1.0×10.3×6.5 inches (HWD) and weighing 2.6 pounds, the Mini 2140 is both smaller and lighter than our other favorite 10-inch netbooks, the ASUS Eee PC 1002HA and the Samsung NC10. Port selection is typical for a netbook, with one notable addition: Along with two USB ports, Ethernet, VGA, headphone and mic jacks, and an SD slot, you also get a 54mm ExpressCard slot for a wider assortment of expansion possibilities (most notably an ExpressCard wireless-broadband card to augment the machine’s standard 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi).

The HP Mini 2140 shares the same basic silhouette as the earlier Mini 1000 and Mini-Note 2133 systems from HP. Because it has an aluminum case, like the 2133, it’s a half-pound heavier than the plastic Mini 1000; it’s a trade-off that may be worth it, however, as the metallic Mini 2140 feels as if it’ll stand up to the rigors of the road better than a plastic Netbook.

Performance is a complete turnaround from that of its 2133 Mini-Note predecessor, however. The VIA processor, coupled with S3G graphics, was simply too slow compared with other netbooks. Heat dissipation was another issue, as you can hear the fan noises kick in on a regular basis. The Mini 1000 was the first HP netbook to side with Intel, and now the 2140 gets the Atom platform as well. It has a 1.6-GHz Intel Atom N270, which is the CPU that every netbook is using, and you get 1GB of memory with Windows XP Home Edition.

The 2140 supports 802.11n, and Bluetooth 2.0 is optional. HP claims that the netbook can recharge up to 90 percent of capacity in about 90 minutes. And for the $629 flavor of the 2140, you can get “Genuine Windows Vista with downgrade to Genuine Windows XP Professional custom installed.” Don’t go looking for more software, though: You’re just getting the basics here. If Windows isn’t your thing, you can request FreeDOS or SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 with your unit.

The HP Mini 2140 is powered by a very powerful 6 cell battery which lasts about 7 hrs 30 mins on a single charge with moderate usage and most of our battery saving tips in action- . Now that is commendable. It is the highest battery life clocked by any netbook so far. It dethrones the Samsung NC10 as the Endurance King in netbooks. Even the 3 cell battery clocks in a decent 4 hrs with moderate to low usage.
