The D-Link Wireless N Router DIR-615 is among the least-expensive draft-n routers on the market and has a great feature set. Un?fortunately it performed poorly on our speed and range tests. At close range, it pumped out only 36 mbps on average, compared with 48 mbps for the competing Belkin N Wireless Router F5D8233-4 v3. And in our long-range tests (about 60 feet, with multiple walls and appliances in between), the D-Link’s throughput dropped to just 3 mbps, versus 13 mbps for the Belkin. Even worse, 15 percent of our long-range tests failed completely due to disconnections, whereas the Belkin had no connection failures.

D-Link’s Wireless N router was rigorously tested and verified for compatibility with Intel’s Next-Gen Wireless N, utilizing intensive real-world testing conducted in typical home and enterprise environment scenarios. In Intel’s testing process, D-Link’s Wireless N router met or exceeded Intel’s requirements for performance, extended range, co-existence with other 802.11b/g clients and access points, and the ability to eliminate Wi-Fi dead spots.

Another advantage of the 300Mbps bandwidth is that it can be adequately shared amongst multiple PCs and notebooks. We streamed a 659Kbps ASF video file to our 802.11 draft-n-equipped notebook while transferring a file to our 802.11g-equipped notebook. The file transfer averaged 2.14MBps (the same rate that was averaged when the transfer was conducted on its own) and the video played stutter-free for the most part, although it did drop a few frames when the 802.11g file transfer was almost two-thirds complete. While streaming videos to the 802.11 draft-n and 802.11g notebooks simultaneously, we didn’t notice any stuttering or any dropped frames, which means that at least two notebooks can wirelessly stream different video files from the same file server at a distance of around 10m away from the router, without any problems.

Internet access is facilitated by a Fast Ethernet port so you’ll need to source a suitable cable or ADSL modem. D-Link takes a leaf from Trendnet’s and Belkin’s book as the router has a useful array of status indicators across the front panel. They’ll tell you when the Internet connection is good, which Ethernet ports are connected and whether the wireless access point is active, but there’s nothing to show whether wireless security is implemented.

From 15 feet, the DIR-615 offered a blazing speed of 90 Mbps. At 200 feet, the router ran at only 8 Mbps. With only two antennas, the DIR-615 barely connected beyond 300 feet, which is about one level of a typical suburban home. Does it matter? Not at this price. We still tapped into the DIR-615 from several rooms away and from the basement (but not from outside).
