The F5 is a Tablet PC made by what has probably become the foremost designer and manufacturer of slate computers. That’s what Motion Computing does, and nothing else. Just as it was gutsy of the then newly-formed company to take on the likes of Fujitsu when Microsoft announced the Tablet PC in late 2002, it was gutsy to introduce the brand-new C5 slate designed for just one vertical market — medical. Reliance on any one market is always risky, and especially one as fickle as healthcare where politics, technical issues, incompatible systems, internal resistance, training requirements and long budget cycles can conspire to present frustrating hurdles.

The 10.4″ (1024 x 768) screen is quite impressive. I was surprised on how bright and vivid the colors were. The view anywhere screen comes standard now and the viewing angles are good. Although, the screen size is smaller I had no problems reading it. The F5 is the perfect mobile desktop set-up when used with the dock and detachable keyboard. By this, I mean the slate sits in the dock like a monitor, but yet can be taken out to travel anywhere you need it to go.

Data input is done through the F5’s Wacom digitized pen and screen. The pen, which is ergonomically designed for comfort, is tethered to the tablet by a string, so you won’t lose it easily. Handwriting recognition is enabled by Windows XP Tablet Edition 2005, although the advanced tablet features in Windows Vista are better equipped to convert your scrawls into text. Unfortunately, as you’ll see later on, the processing parts may not be able to handle the ferocity of Windows Vista. As long as you’re not writing medical white papers, Windows XP does a valiant job on note-taking and doodling.

Integrated features include a 2-megapixel camera on the rear, an RFID reader for inventory tracking and management, and an optional barcode scanner (prices are dependent on the amount of machines ordered and specifications) - making the F5 an ideal tool for owners of small shops.
Bluetooth is built in, letting you connect peripherals and making the lack of ports less of a problem. There’s a docking station, offering three USB 2.0 ports, a 10/100 Ethernet connection and a VGA-out port. It also holds the tablet at a usable angle. A comfortable USB keyboard is included as standard, with an integrated touchpad for navigation.
