The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a security device on the system board that will hold computer-generated keys for encryption. It is a hardware-based solution that helps to avoid attacks by hackers looking to capture passwords and encryption keys to sensitive data.
The TPM allows the R1F to run applications securely and to make transactions and communications more trustworthy. When bundled with ASUS Security Protect Manager, it ensures overall system security, file protection capabilities and protect against email/privacy concerns.
ASUS R1F Series adopts the unique semiconductor based RF biometric fingerprint scanner. The RF electronic imaging mechanism reads the fingerprint pattern from the live layer of skin that lies just beneath the skin´s dry outer surface layer. Therefore, the sensor is less affected by common skin surface conditions, including dry, worn, calloused, dirty or oily skin, that can impair the ability of other sensors to acquire accurate fingerprint images.

The Asus R1F clocks in at 2.5 kg or 5.5 lbs. It is very light on the lap but if you hold it up when using it as a tablet, as I do, you may find your arm becoming a little tired. I think I’ll have to learn to keep it flat on the desk if I’m writing for extended periods of time or make a stand for it to lean on. The noise from the tablet’s hardware is whisper quiet — unless you’ve been running it for a considerable amount of time and the fan has to kick-in full speed to keep it cool.

The Asus R1 has a solid build and keyboard. It feels sturdy in your hands, with minimal flex. The screen swivels with ease for a 180 degree view, which comes in handy when you don’t want the keyboard or want to show someone across a table what’s on your screen. Being able to write directly on the screen and convert your writing to text brings back that personal aspect — maybe even gives you a bit of practice with handwriting (in case you’d forgotten how to do that now that we type so much these days).

The wrapping presentation of the notebook is peculiar, in that it was pretty posh. When you open the box you will find a black presentation box, inside is the R1F and the the included carrying pouch. It’s like something you receive from a jewelery store. The pouch and carrying bag are of a designer styled motif, far from your “average” black carrying cases. It is brownish-beige and has a retro look and feel, like something that came out of the 70’s - but very stylish. They are trimmed by brown leather (the one on the pouch looks genuine). The bags alone easily look to be worth more than AUD$100 - based on the prices I’ve seen on stand alone cases. It was a real surprise and the people at the shop were being cheeky and said it didn’t really come with the laptop. They wanted to keep it for themselves cos they really are quite sexy.

The digitised screen measures 13.3 inches and is a good size for writing notes and drawing sketches. Screen accuracy is excellent. When using the included stylus with Windows Journal software, it’s simple to take notes and convert them to text. Rotating the screen 180-degrees for tablet-PC use, the screen can instantly switch from landscape to portrait layout at the touch of a button. Being Tablet PC you can either save these in their raw form or transcribe your writing to text. With Wi-Fi built-in, you can easily send your notes as email attachments to colleagues.

The PC can be “commandeered” in three different ways: keyboard, touchpad, and the touchscreen pen (part of the bundle). All of these deserve different grades. The keyboard is not much to talk about - it’s comfortable to work on, but without any excursions to the top class. Generally, hardly anyone would find a reason to complain. The touch pad gets a lower grade, as it would definitely benefit from higher sensitivity. On the other hand, however, the sensitivity and precision provided by the pen are on a very high level and it was a truly enjoyable experience using it.

Being a tablet, this PC is suited to be worked on even without the keyboard and all the top side of its body. The power button is situated on the left side and we can find different buttons scattered around the display. Namely it’s the Escape key, a key to switch between Landscape (16:10) and Portrait (10:16) modes of orientation of the display, and (this amused me a bit) a key labeled “Ctrl+Alt+Del”. Besides the finger print reader there’s also a HOLD slider which protects the buttons on the lid from being pushed unintentionally. Unfortunately it does not protect the power button as well.

The extras that come in the well packaged ASUS R1F are, the ASUS Bag right when you open the box, the laptop is nicely put into a well textured sleeve in which it has a magnet for opening the lid. ASUS provide the user with a tray for the 2nd hard drive, since it has a modular bay. As previously mentioned the modular battery, is expected to be released in the months to come.A great thing is that the AC adapter is nice and small and only gets really warm, the size is 4 inches in length, 1.5 inches in width and 1 inch in height. It is also very light, and easy to carry. The pen that is used for the table in neatly packed in a box.
