At 3.8 pounds, the dv2 is a bit heavy for a 12.1-inch system without an optical drive. By comparison, the Samsung NC20 weighs 3.4 pounds. On the other hand, the sloping design on the dv2 has a sleeker profile, measuring 0.9 inches at its thinnest point up to 1.3 inches, while the NC20 is 1.2 inches all the way around. When viewed from the side with the lid closed, the dv2 is reminiscent of a sports car. And the beauty is more than skin-deep; thanks to its magnesium alloy casing, the dv2 feels sturdier than most netbooks.

A full size keyboard would have improved the dv2’s standing against other 12-inch ultraportables. Alas, its 92% keyboard is the same size as that of the Mini 12. The keys are practically the same in design and in size as those found on the HP Mini 1000 and Mini 2140. Unless you have stubby fingers, though, the typing experience is still very exceptional for an ultraportable. If a full size keyboard is a must, more expensive ultraportable systems like the Toshiba Portégé R600-S4202 and the HP Elitebook 2530p have the best typing experiences. Because of the dv2’s roomier dimensions, a pair of responsive mouse buttons is located beneath the touchpad rather than flanking the sides of it, like those of the Mini 1000 and 2140.

As for the Pavilion dv2’s design, the unit’s trim lines and slickly coated, glossy black surface are snazzy and eye-catching. The unit measures 11.5 by 9.45 by 1.29 inches, and weighs just 3.8 pounds-definitely a lightweight eye-catcher. And yet it somehow still manages to squeeze in HDMI and VGA video outputs, three USB 2.0 ports, a PC Express Card slot, a flash-card reader, ethernet, and 802.11n Wi-Fi. within addition, HP throws in a matching external DVD burner.
