HP’s EliteBook 8730w laptop is very powerful, but fits into a small form factor. It is 1½” tall, 15 1/2″ wide, 11″ long, and weighs 8 lbs. It comes with a 17″ HP Dreamcolor LCD that displays 1920×1200 resolution. Unlike most laptops, it’s keyboard includes a 10-key number pad and fingerprint reader. To top it off, the laptop has just about every kind of input/output device needed; Blu-ray Disc drive, 4 USB, eSATA, FireWire, SD/PRO/MMC/XD card reader, Bluetooth, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n wireless, a dial-up modem, HDMI and SVGA.

A notebook aimed at graphics professionals is going to need a high-quality screen, and here the EliteBook 8730w — specifically, models (like the FU471ET reviewed here) with the DreamColor display technology — delivers big-time. What hits you when you put a high-quality test image on-screen (like those available on HP’s Graphic Arts Image Bank) is the sheer depth and vibrancy of colour — no illusion, as this screen can display 16.7 million colours (24-bit colour) rather than the 262,144 (18-bit colour) of regular notebook LCDs.

HP’s laptop stands up to some staunch competition in terms of speed. While the MacBook Pro was fastest in pure chip speed, beating the HP Elitebook 8730w in our Cinebench rendering test, HP’s notebook pulled ahead in Photoshop and After Effects, where it was helped by the nippy 7,200rpm drive. Unsurprisingly, it can’t match quad-core laptops in AE, but it was marginally faster than even the Asus G71V in Photoshop.

The keyboard is a pleasure to use, with deep key-throw distance and a full numeric keypad. Above the keyboard is a touch-sensitive strip with a sliding volume control and quick-launch buttons to enable/disable the wireless radios and launch the HP Info Center software. This strip is very sensitive, and more than once we inadvertently switched off Wi-Fi when overreaching for a function key. The 3.5-inch diagonal touch pad features three mouse buttons, and there’s a pointing-stick controller as well. The mouse buttons are the only real ergonomic misfire: If you press the lower part of one of the buttons, it will move, but not register a click. A fingerprint reader sits in the lower right corner of the touch pad.

These systems are mobile workstations, but we can’t forget that they are also desktop replacements. That means that they should have a lot of features built right in, so you don’t need USB hubs and card readers cluttering up your work area. The Lenovo, being a thicker system overall and not placing the battery in the rear was able to use a DVI connection, as well as the forward-looking Display Port and VGA. The HP’s battery takes almost the entire rear side so this cannot but used for connections which means it does doesn’t have room for the large DVI connector, instead getting HDMI and VGA. The Lenovo gets and extra USB port and as an upgrade it gets a CF reader, but HP has external SATA, which the best way to add lots of high-speed storage to a notebook. If you want this from your ThinkPad, you need to buy the dock. Similiarly, if you want dual-link DVI from the HP, you’ll have to get the dock.
