Gateway’s FX6800-01e is the first mainstream PC we’ve seen with Intel’s new Core i7 desktop processor, but that’s far from the only exciting feature in this desktop. A smartly spruced-up case design and a forward-looking motherboard give this PC a decided edge over its competition. The orange-and-black case might not be for everyone, and a lower-wattage power supply will keep any hard-core upgrade plans in check. Still, the FX6800-01e is fast enough out of the box, and also provides an enticing upgrade platform for anyone inclined toward post-purchase tinkering. If that describes you, we recommend this PC.

Aside from the Core i7-920, the FX6800-01e has 3GB of DDR3, triple-channel 1066MHz RAM, a 750GB 7,200rpm SATA-II hard-drive, SuperMulti-format DVD burner with LabelFlash and 7.1-channel high-def audio with Creative’s X-Fi XtremeGamer sound enhancement. Graphics come courtesy of ATI’s Radeon HD 4850, with 512MB of its own GDDR3 graphics memory, two DVI ports (with HDMI and VGA adapters included) and a single S-Video output. Gateway made storage expansion straightforward by providing two SATA drive bays fitted with swap-cages in the front drive slot.

The FX6800-01e is equipped with one of the new Intel Core i7-920 processors, a quad-core processor with Hyper-Threading technology. In practice, this means that the i7-920 is capable of processing up to eight streams simultaneously, a plus when you’re doing multimedia work or playing multithreaded games when they are available (games are only now just starting to support dual-thread; future games will be much more multithreaded). The Core i7 family is Intel’s latest set of CPUs, with the second iteration of 45nm technology (code-named Nehalem). Along with the Core i7-920, the FX6800-01e is equipped with a single 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card.

On the rear panel, you’ll find two PS/2 slots for connecting a mouse and keyboard, a nine-pin serial port, two external SATA (eSATA) jacks, six USB ports, one FireWire port, and the traditional Ethernet and eight-channel audio hookups. There are actually two front panels, one on the front of the machine, which houses the expected headphone and microphone jacks, along with another FireWire port; and one on the top of the case, sporting a multiformat card reader, two USB ports and, most interestingly, a Copy button for easily copying the contents of your cards to your hard drive. (A similarly no-hassle Backup button is also located on the front of the case to make saving files regularly also a snap.)

The hype surrounding Intel’s new Core i7 Quad-Core processor touches down at Gateway in the form of the new FX6800-01e gaming machine, with a hot new i7 beating within. The inky-black-and-orange machine impressed us with its computational fortitude, but lost points with a messy array of trialware scattered on the new machine, some cheap construction issues, and a few odd crashes. Despite the holdbacks, it’s still a lot of machine for the money, and not many other manufacturers can match the same outfit of premium hardware for the price.

In terms of the case design, Gateway has made upgrading the hard drives to the system extremely easy. Two hard drive trays are accessible behind a front panel. Simply install a standard desktop SATA drive into the tray and slide it in to add drive space. One problem though is the layout of the front USB ports. In fact, there aren’t really any as the two USB ports are on the top rather than the front.
