The Dell Latitude E4300 sports a nice 13.3 inch WXGA display which has a native resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. The display quality is brilliant with a matte finish instead of the usual glossy screens. While it is not as attractive as Glossy displays, it offers much better visibility under direct light. The display is LED backlit and looks beautiful while also being more power efficient compared to the other CCFL backlit displays. The display has nice brightness and contrast levels and produces nice and vibrant images. It has quite decent viewing angles, especially the horizontal ones. All in all, a nice display but most people would have preferred a glossy one.

With a 2.40GHz Cure 2 Duo Processor and having only an integrated card, the Dell E4300 packs similar performance to its bigger brother the Dell E6400. As a result I’ve included only a few performance benchmarks in this review. The processor is effectively the same as the P8600, except in small factor a minor 3MB cache boost.

This was clearly evident when comparing the start-up times to Windows XP SP3. My E4300 reached the windows login page in 35 seconds, and finished loading windows in 61 seconds flat. In comparison, by D820 took 1:09 to reach the Windows Login, and an additional 1:44 to fully load Windows XP. Bear in mind that my D820 has more programs, but the difference is appreciably significant.

The 13.3-inch, LED-backlit display offers impressively bright, vibrant images and strong viewing angles. Watching a DVD of Star Wars: A New Hope, we were pleasantly surprised by the trueness of the blacks in outer space scenes and the brilliant fidelity of other colors like the blue sky over Tatooine or the gold metal on C-3PO’s chassis. At half-brightness, the screen was well illuminated; at 100 percent, it was overkill.

The case of the Latitude M4300 scores nearly full points when it comes to sturdiness. Wherever one bends or presses the case, the distortions left behind are always minimal or irrelevant. This is also true about the display, which shows not only an excellent resistance to pressure, but also a great torsional rigidity which made a positive impression on us.

The magnesium alloy, which was used in the case, has a very good weight to sturdiness relation, which is clearly observable in the laptop. Additionally, the robust metallic hinges, which have no problems whatsoever in holding the 13.3 inch screen in a fixed position, are yet another positive aspect of the E4300.
