The Asus Eee PC S101 has been described as Asus’ best looking netbook to date. The Asus S101 has some impressive specifications, with impressive battery life of up to 5 hours, and a great looking slim design of just 18mm - 25mm thick and weighing just 1KG
The very impressive looking Asus S101 takes the Eee PC to new levels, competing well with the popular Samsung NC10 and other newer models. For those of you who want a great looking netbook with great portability features, the Asus Eee PC S101 comes highly recommend.

With the basic parameters of what makes a Netbook fairly set in stone, it’s becoming harder than ever for a new model to stand out from the crowd, as evidenced by largely identical recent Netbooks from Dell, Lenovo, and HP–though the HP Mini 1000’s impressively large keyboard was a plus. To this fray returns Asus, the company that arguably created the Netbook market with its Eee PC line, with a new take on the familiar Intel Atom/Windows XP combo. The Eee PC S101 takes the same components found in other Netbooks and dresses them up in a sharp new chassis that wouldn’t look out of place in a high-end ultraportable.

The EEE PC S101 sports a 10.2″ LED backlit LCD display which supports a native resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels - the standard for netbooks. The display quality is very nice and the colors are sharp. The brightness levels are adequate and the contrast good. It also provides decent viewing angles, both vertical and horizontal. The LED backlit display is more thinner and power efficient than the normal ones. The display quality is marginally better than that of the EEE PC 1000H.

Measuring 10.3 x 7.0 x 0.7 inches and weighing 2.4 pounds, the S101 is the lightest and thinnest netbook to grace our testing lab. When placed next to the Eee PC 1000H, the S101 is noticeably thinner (the 1000H is 0.8 inches thicker) and lighter (the 1000H is 0.8 pounds heavier). When stacked up with the MSI Wind, HP 2133 Mini-Note, and Acer Aspire one, the Eee PC S101 was hands-down the the most svelte. After we slid the S101 into our purse we almost forgot it was there as we walked around New York City; with the AC adapter it has a travel weight of a mere 3 pounds.

The 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor and 1GB of DDR 2 memory are no surprise, but when it comes to internal storage the S101 is practically bulging at the seams. The internal SSD already runs to a healthy 16GB but in addition to that you’ll also find a 16GB SD card in the box - effectively giving you 32GB in total, all solid state so you don’t need to worry about bashes or bumps damaging your data. There’s also an additional 20GB of secure online storage thrown in for free, although how much you’ll actually use it is debatable - and it’s only free for the first 18 months. Once your year and half is up, you’ll need to fork out to keep it going.

Like previous Eee PCs, a slip case is included, but instead of the usual neoprene effort, you get a smart suede-like affair with a magnetic flap. It’s very nice to handle and provides adequate protection when carrying your netbook around in a bag. And since the S101 is pretty well put together, small falls when inside the case shouldn’t be too much of a problem either. As mentioned earlier Windows versions also come with a 16GB SDHC card and it’s a smart move on Asus’ behalf, since we often find ourselves recommending one for expanding the internal storage. It has perhaps missed a trick, though, by not following Acer’s example by including two memory card slots - one for permanent storage and one for modular usage.

There are three versions of the S101 but the one you are more likely to find is the Windows XP Home version (our review model) with its 16GB SSD drive. There are two much harder to find Linux versions with 32GB and 64GB SSDs, costing approximately £489 inc. VAT. To boost the capacity of the Windows version, Asus bundles in a 16GB SDHC card supported by the built-in 4-in-1 card reader, bringing the capacity up to 32GB.
