As with most network-attached storage devices, you can configure the unit via a Web browser. In this case, though, the interface is a sterling rendering that strikes the right combination of being easy on the eye and being easy to use. Two simple steps get you through the media server setup; exposing folders with media content to the DLNA (UPnP) and/or iTunes server (this is done on the Folders page via two buttons next to each folder), and choosing who has rights to access specific folders.

The Home Media Network Drive comes in 500GB ($159.99) and 1-terabyte ($229.99) versions. (We tested the 1TB.) The drive has the basic physical attributes typical of its class. The rear panel has a single Gigabit Ethernet port (10Mbps/100Mbps/1,000Mbps), for connecting to your router, and a single USB port. The USB port lets you attach a regular, non-NAS external hard drive (or USB key-chain drive) to share the contents of the attached drive across your network, the second drive acting like supplemental storage for the NAS. Alternately, you can use the port to share a USB-interface printer, eliminating the need for a separate print server. That’s a nice bonus if your router doesn’t incorporate a print-server function.

Setting up the drive is very straightforward. You just connect the power and Ethernet cables and then install Iomega’s Home Storage Manager software from the CD-ROM supplied with the drive. Iomega also includes a copy of the Retrospect Express back-up programme for making regular back-ups of your files.

The drive comes with EMC Retrospect, which is automated backup software. It’s easy to use and lets you set a schedule for backing up important files. The getup also comes with 2GB of free Mozy online backup service. You can get 2GB free from Mozy no matter who you are or what drives you own, though, so it’s mostly just a little extra fluff.
From a hardware standpoint, there’s a USB port on the back of the drive that can be used to hook up a second external hard drive or as a print server. That’s a great little feature that I think adds a fair amount of value to this thing. You can just place your printer and your backup drive next to your router and be done with it.
