A small, rectangular USB modem, the 0.8-ounce 598U measures a tiny 3.1 by 0.9 by 0.44 inches. Its shiny black shell is adorned with a big, yellow Sprint logo that lights up when the device is powered. There’s also a blue power light, and an orange LED on top lights up when you’re connected. On the side, there’s a port to attach an external antenna and a microSD memory card slot. We tested the microSD card slot with a speedy SanDisk 8GB Extreme card, uploading and downloading files from a PC at a disappointing one-tenth the speed of SanDisk’s own card reader. It can also be difficult to get microSD cards out of the recessed slot.

The 598U comes with some good features that are becoming standard in USB broadband cards (particularly from Sierra Wireless). It has a 32 GB microSD slot that goes above and beyond what most flash drives offer. It’s practically an iPod/emergency backup solution.
In addition to this, it comes packaged with Sierra Wireless’ TruInstall ©. What this means is that no CD should be required for installation. In the past, one would still need a Sprint CD to install the actual software to activate the device on the network. This led some of our readers to ask “Do I need a CD for the CD-less installation?”. Didn’t exactly earn manufacturers cool points. Not so anymore.

As with the Compass 597 before it, the Sierra 598U ships with no software CD because everything you need for Mac or Windows is in on board memory and auto-installs upon insertion (so long as software isn’t already installed). Additionally, the Sierra 598U takes advantage of Sprint’s “One-Touch” activation feature, simplifying the process to get your device fully operational on the Sprint Mobile Broadband network. The 598U requires Windows XP or Vista (no info on Win2K support) or Mac OSX version 10.4 or later, including Leopard 10.5
