  • Alienware Area-51 m15x
By PCMAN on May 3rd, 2008 | No Comments Comments

image Flashy colors and custom paint jobs, once the sole domain of high-end gaming desktops, have been steadily creeping into notebook design for years. The Alienware Area-51 m15x takes this trend and puts a more futuristic and elegant spin on things, with its clean look and color-shifting LEDs. The notebook’s smart appearance is accompanied by the best mobile performance and hardware money can buy. Even better, it’s all squeezed into a relatively light (for a high-octane gaming laptop) 7.8-pound chassis, making it a delightful system for even the most demanding fraggers on the go.

  • Alienware intros 4GHz quad desktop with Intel 45nm
By PCMAN on November 13th, 2007 | No Comments Comments

image Alienware today introduced what it says is one of the fastest factory-tuned home computers to date. A new version of the Area-51 ALX mid-tower PC uses the power efficiency of Intel’s new 45-nanometer Core 2 Extreme QX9650 quad-core processor combined with the case’s more advanced cooling to offer one of the highest default clock speeds of any desktop PCs: the new system jumps from 3GHz to 4GHz without overheating or extreme power demands. t also becomes the first known system to use AMD’s Radeon HD 3870 graphics and pairs two of the GPUs together for better 3D performance in CrossFire mode.

As part of Alienware’s premium ALX line, the updated Area-51 is priced at $5,500 but comes with the 4GHz quad-core processor and dual Radeon HD cards as standard alongside 2GB of memory, dual 160GB 10,000RPM hard drives, and both built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi as well as an accompanying access point. The system retains other upgrade options such as dual Radeon HD 2900 XT cards or dual 64GB solid-state hard drives. Alienware ships stock systems ordered today shortly after Christmas.

  • Alienware adds 64GB SSD option to ALX desktops
By PCMAN on October 10th, 2007 | No Comments Comments

Alienware has already brought some 64GB SSD drives to its laptops, and it’s now giving some of its desktops the same solid state treatment as well, with both the AMD-based Aurora ALX and Intel-based Area-51 ALX available with the speedy, and pricey new option. What’s more, apparently sensing that its customers wouldn’t be satisfied with a mere 64GB, it seems that Alienware is only offering the drives in dual RAID 0 configurations, giving you a total of 128GB and an extra $1,700 on top of the already multi-thousand dollar price tag.

Alienware’s Sentia m3450 is a minor upgrade to their previous m3400 thin and light notebook. The biggest change is the use of the new Intel Core 2 Duo processors over the older Core Duo. This provides 64-bit software support and slightly improved battery life over the previous model. They also offer 1GB of PC2-5400 DDR2 memory to let it run through applications smoohtly.

This subrating corresponds to the quality of a laptop’s physical design, with particular emphasis on size and weight. Keyboard and cursor controls are critical: Keys should be of sufficient size, offer decent travel, and be logically organized, and the touch pad and the pointing stick (or both) should be responsive and precise. We look for a sensible layout of drives and ports. Extra points are awarded for especially sturdy construction and the use of materials that make a laptop stronger. This subrating is given the greatest emphasis in categories where portability is paramount.
