  • HP Photosmart A636 Compact Photo Printer
By PCMAN on July 20th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

    image

Most small-format dedicated photo printers are notably easy to set up and use. Almost all of them are suitable for technophobes who just want to print snapshots with as little effort as possible. So when I say that the HP Photosmart A636 Compact Photo Printer ($149.99 direct) stands out as easier to use than most, that’s saying a lot. Quite simply, its design includes stellar convenience features that are as welcome as they are rare. Other printers will no doubt catch up sooner or later, but the A636 got there first.

At a casual glance, the A636 looks like a fairly typical small-format printer. It’s a little bigger than some, because it’s designed to handle 5-by-7-inch photos as well as 4-by-6s and 4-by-12-inch panoramas. Even so, it’s easily portable, at 5.3 by 9.9 by 4.6 inches (HWD) and only 3.4 pounds. A built-in handle makes it easy to carry and pivots out of the way when you don’t need it. HP also sells a Bluetooth option ($39.99 direct) and optional battery ($24.99 direct), so you can not only take the printer with you, but print photos without a power outlet or cable. According to HP, the battery weighs roughly 8 ounces and can print 75 4-by-6 photos on a full charge.

  • Gateway M-152XL
By PCMAN on May 17th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

    image

Gateway has developed a reputation for bundling state-of-the-art processing parts in relatively inexpensive laptops. The Gateway M-152XL, for instance, is a desktop replacement laptop that runs on Intel’s latest “Penryn” technology and includes an ATI graphics card for casual gamers—not bad when you combine this kind of raw horsepower with a $1,299 (direct) price tag. In a world filled with innovative laptop designs, however, Gateway doesn’t really break any new ground by’s offering this model in several colors.

  • Gateway GT5662
By PCMAN on April 18th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

imageNew in Gateway’s line of “retail-model” PCs, the Gateway GT5662 ($750 direct) is available online and in big-box stores as a nonconfigurable, take-it-out-of-the-box-and-use-it PC. It’s part of the growing category of midrange PCs that used to run around $1,500 four or five years ago and now have dropped to sub-$800 price levels. Yet you still get one of the latest processors, a large hard drive, and a discrete graphics card. This is a good step up for the user whose needs are expanding but who still wants a reasonably priced system.

You can find the GT5662 at stores like Circuit City and online at Newegg.com and J&R. Best Buy also carries it, though only in some locations. The GT5662 is more of a one-size-fits-all affair, and I’m fine with that. It fulfills both the convenience and impulse buy for those who don’t want to spend over an hour of their lives trying to figure out what components they need, as they would at a configuration kiosk in a store or on the manufacturer’s Web site.

  • Gateway adds 15-inch models, 64-bit to FX notebooks
By PCMAN on April 12th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

imageGateway is finishing its week with a significant upgrade to its FX Edition gaming notebooks that brings its first mid-size models. Previously limited only to the 17-inch P series, the FX name is now attached to the M series with a new model that provides relatively quick performance at a smaller size. The M-6850FX is slightly slower than the base P series with a 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo and uses the cooler-running Radeon HD 2600 to provide better-than-average 3D to a category often neglected by PC builders. It also leaves little necessary to upgrade with 3GB of memory and a 320GB hard drive as stock. Gateway sells the system at retail shops for $1,000.

The American firm’s P series FX flagship now also receives an official confirmation of a quiet upgrade made earlier in the week. The P-172X is the first FX portable to use a mainstream Intel Penryn-based chip and comes with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo as standard. Gateway’s refresh is equally the first to ship with a full 4GB of RAM. It continues to draw heavily on the GeForce 8800M GTS as the heart of its game-friendly performance and comes with 320GB of hard drive space in a RAID stripe at the system’s normal $2,000 price tag.

  • Gateway One (GZ7220)
By PCMAN on October 14th, 2007 | No Comments Comments

0,1425,i=191289,00 The Gateway One ($1,799.99 direct) evokes the design of the circa-1997 Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh (TAM), the all-in-one PC considered to be the granddaddy of today’s iMac. The One looks more like the TAM than today’s iMac, thanks to the fact that the "slab" reaches all the way to the table surface. The One can be considered a competitor to the current Apple iMac, with a built-in widescreen LCD display, notebook-sourced Intel components, and a smooth slab design. It has innovations such as tool-less drive bays, true expansion possibilities (imagine that in an all-in-one PC!), and a competitive price—although the multimedia-oriented $1,800 version I reviewed (the GZ7220) is overkill for most users. The mid-level $1,500 (the ZX190) and base $1,300 (the GZ7108) versions are more compelling.

  • Gateway rolls out P-series laptops, GT-series desktop
By PCMAN on October 12th, 2007 | No Comments Comments

    gatewayp-series-lg.jpg

While it likely won’t do much to appease those who missed out on the ever-so-shortly-available $300 Gateway laptop, the company has just announced a couple of new entries in its slightly higher-end P-series laptop line, which each manage to stay under the $1,000 mark. Those include the $800 P-6801 model, which sports a 1.46GHz Pentium dual-core processor and a 160GB hard drive, and the $950 P-6822, which ups things to a 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo processor, a 250GB hard drive, and a built-in 1.3 megapixel webcam. Both models also pack the same 17-inch 1440 x 900 display, along with the usual Intel X3100 graphics. On the desktop front, Gateway has let loose its new GT5628 model, which is based around Intel’s G33 chipset and packs a speedy 2.4GHz Core 2 Quad processor, along with GeForce 8500 GT graphics, 3GB of RAM, and a spacious 500GB hard drive. Look for it to set you back $950 when it lands October 14th, which is the same day the laptops are set to be released.
