  • 2008 Bejing Olympics Webcam Looks More like a Toy
By PCMAN on July 30th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

    image

The 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing is set to begin next week and what better way to commemorate that experience than with a webcam that resembles the Olympic rings. Yes, it looks like a plastic toy but it does have “exciting” LED lights in each of the rings and of course the camera. The camera features 1.3 MegaPixels and it connects to your computer via USB, but will not work on a Mac computer. The 2008 Bejing Olympic Webcam retails for $26.99.

  • Kensington launches ComboSaver portable laptop lock
By PCMAN on July 30th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

    image

Kensington has launched the ComboSaver portable notebook lock, designed to offer laptop protection while on the move.
A specially designed combination lock with a coiled cable, Kensington says it’s its “most portable and secure offering yet.”
Aimed at students and mobile workers, the ComboSaver’s T-bar mechanism and steel cable claim to provide optimum security, while a “slinky” style self-coiling cable means the device twists up to become compact.
Kensington says this means it is much smaller and lighter than other locks on the market, making it an option for people who need to carry their lock in their laptop bag.
The ComboSaver lock is on sale for £29.99 from Dixons, PC World and other online retailers.

  • Hitachi puts out 1TB CinemaStar 24×7 drive
    By PCMAN on July 30th, 2008 | 2 Comments2 Comments Comments

    image

Hitachi this morning launched a pair of CinemaStar drives for users of DVRs and any other computer or device that needs to run for long periods of time. The 1TB 7K1000.B relies on the same basic design as its normal DeskStar counterpart but is tuned to run all day and in harsher conditions. The new version is both more resilient against high temperatures as well as modified to run more quietly while it seeks data on the drive. The disk further borrows power optimization tricks from Hitachi’s notebook drives to cut down on its energy draw.

The capacity is twice as much as for the previous best CinemaStar and is enough to hold 247 hours of HD video in MPEG-4, Hitachi says, also noting that it can handle as many as ten data streams at once. The 7K1000.B should be ready in August at an unlisted price.
For smaller devices, the company is also launching the 5K320. The notebook-sized 2.5-inch disk also holds the most in its physical size at 320GB and shares much of the same heat and power behavior as its larger sibling. It appears slightly later and ships in September.

  • Toshiba reveals plans for mini-book
By PCMAN on July 24th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

    image

The notebook giant is planning an ultra low-cost portable to join the ranks of the Eee PC and MSI Wind (though not necessarily a direct competitor, they say). Check out our pic, and first impressions.

Officials won’t reveal details, yet, but they are showing a prototype of a device they’ve created to spur development ideas. The tiny handheld (shown in the main pic below) reminded us more of a UMPC than a notebook, with the keyboard ditched in favour of a touchscreen keyboard.
We’re told the device runs Vista, and Intel’s Atom processor, and in our brief hand-on play, it ran relatively smoothly, though it was a bit awkward with the virtual keyboard taking up two-thirds of the screen.
The 5.6inch screen prototype has a motherboard half the size of the motherboard on the Portege R500 notebook. Onboard is a 64GB solid state drive, and GPS. Toshiba also said they have found a way to make antennas follow a curved surface.
