The slightly heavier Inspiron B130, which starts at about $549, offers a similar choice of lower-end components, along with options for a more middle-range Pentium M processor, up to 1GB of RAM, and the choice of a 14.1-inch or 15.4-inch wide-screen display. Though the Pentium processor should deliver somewhat better performance and battery life, the B130 still resides in the basic class of laptops.

The Dell Inspiron B130 is a 15.4″ widescreen notebook, depending on how you configure it the B130 can be considered a budget offering or a mainstream type notebook with decent performance. The Inspiron B120 offered by Dell is precisely the same as the B130 except with a 14-inch widescreen. The B120 build and dimensions match that of the B130, only the B120 has a thicker plastic area around the screen to replace the display real estate.

The B130′s exterior reminds me of the three-year-old, bulkier Inspiron and Latitude notebooks. The system’s dimensions (14 by 10.4 by 1.4 inches HWD) and weight (6.3 pounds) may lead you to believe that this notebook has a 15.4-inch screen. That’s why the smaller, 14-inch screen has me scratching my head. The plastic material surrounding the screen and keyboard feels rougher than it does on other Inspiron models. The texture of the case is consistent with that of the Lenovo 3000 C100.

The screen for the Inspiron B130 is a bit of a disappointment. The 15.4” wide screen LCD is nice while the system is plugged in, but when running on batteries it dims the screen to the point where it can be hard to operate. It is driven by the Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics that share 128MB of system memory. Don’t expect any significant 3D graphics performance from this solution.
