HP’s Pavilion Elite m9600t is their latest customizable performance desktop system that comes equipped with the new Core i7 920 quad core desktop processor and 6GB of triple channel memory for some very impressive performance. The system is a good general purpose desktop system for those looking to do just about anything. It isn’t going to be the fastest thing out there, but performance is good for the price ($1500 as configured). Just be aware that it can get quite loud at times.

If you want to play games on this rig, stick to 1,280×1,024 resolution, and the experience will be great. The m9600t ticked off a score of 24,463 in 3DMark Vantage. That’s about 5 percent lower than the showing by the Cyberpower Gamer Dragon 9500 we reviewed last month, but it’s still in a very respectable neighborhood. With Company of Heroes, the m9600t scored 56.2 frames per second (fps) at that same resolution under DirectX 10. Again, that’s a little less than what the Dragon 9500 managed, but it’s still quite acceptable.

It’s at this point where things get a little murky. In the middle of the front of the m9600t, HP put in a slot designed to fit its “pocket media drive†accessory. These are small portable hard drives that run off of USB. In the back of the of pocket drive bay is a full-sized USB plug; all you do is slot the drive into the bay and the built-in plug plugs into the drive. An eject button nearby ejects the drive when you’re finished with it. Further down the front of the chassis is another specialized drive bay that fits HP’s media drives, which are full-sized external drives. Inside this slot is another USB plug like you’d find on the end of a full-sized USB cable as well as a DC jack designed to fit into the back of the (traditionally) external media drive.
