The TP25E looks more like a fancy clock radio or piece of Bang & Olufsen audio equipment than your usual boxy PC. It is a lot more distinct than the A/V-style systems such as the Velocity Micro CineMagix Grand Theater or the TP25E’s predecessor, the VAIO VGX-XL3. It’s basically a black cylinder, roughly 5 inches tall and 16 inches wide that looks like a giant hockey puck with a PC built into it. There are cheaper versions with internal TV tuners, but the top-of-the-line TP25E comes with two external digital cable tuners instead.

There’s more to the Sony VAIO TP25 than just its Blu-ray capability, though. Although using the two ATI Digital Cable tuners will require installation and a separate monthly cable plan, they will let you both watch and record HD digital cable on the TP25. CableCard-based TV service is not available everywhere yet, but if you do have access and can establish a reliable signal, CableCard can provide you with the most advanced, highest-quality TV-to-PC experience around.

This particular version of the TP25 arrived with two external ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuners that allow you to watch and record two different programs at the same time. The tuners are CableCard compatible, but even without a CableCard, you should be able to receive Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital TV signals either Over the Air (OTA) or through your cable system if your provider delivers clear Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM), a “free” digital piggyback arrangement that arrives over the same cable line as its analog signals.
