Four white LEDs shine through the cover to show you power, drive capacity, and drive activity status. You’ll still need to install WD Drive Manager software to make the capacity LEDs work (the software also puts a WD menu in your menu bar with a status/capacity indicator), but at least this time it is Mac-compatible. The drive will work fine on its own without the WD Drive Manager software). It comes formatted as HFS+, the Mac native format, so all you have to do is plug it in. This means it won’t be readable on a Windows-based PC unless you reformat to FAT32 or NTFS.

Since the dimensions of the My Passport Studio are almost identical to the older Passports there wasn’t much to catch my eye until I touched the new “soft-touch” finish on the Passport Elite. A common criticism users had with the older Passports was the glossy finish was a magnet for fingerprints and made it difficult to securely hold the drive in your hand.

The My Passport features dual interfaces: FireWire 400 and USB 2.0. It doesn’t offer FireWire 800, which is a bit disappointing as this option allows for the highest possible speed for a pocket-size external hard drive. On the plus side, it has a capacity gauge. It’s just a ballpark measurement with four blocks that glow white as you gobble up another 80GB of space. And when not in use, the gauge can be slid to the side to cover the ports, protecting them from dust.

This form factor has become incredibly popular over the last year, a trend fuelled largely by another of Dell’s laptops, the excellent XPS M1330. It’s a great form factor, allowing for weights around 2kg or less without sacrificing too much in terms of screen or keyboard size. The keyboard on the Dell Vostro 1310 was adequately sized, but the clacking noise and minimal key resistance make the board seem a little bit cheap. We appreciate the recessed touch pad, which makes it less likely that you’ll accidentally graze the pad while typing. However, the touch pad feels a bit cramped and would benefit from a slightly larger surface. On the lower right of the keyboard sits a fingerprint reader, which lets you log onto Windows with the swipe of a finger. Above the keyboard you’ll find a handy row of light-touch volume and playback controls, of the type usually found on consumer-focused media machines.

Viewing angle stability on the other hand, leaves room for improvement. While the image stays fairly constant if the horizontal viewing angle gets flatter, until it reaches a point where the contrast drops quickly, it is not very forgiving in vertical direction. Even small deviations from the optimal viewing angle cause significant changes in the image and end in a rapid darkening of the screen. This means frequent adjustments of the display to get a proper image, especially during mobile usage.

Performance in the Vostro 1310 is quite good, especially for the lower cost models. The unit evaluated came equipped with a Intel Core 2 Duo T8100. This is one of the lower end of the 8000 series dual core mobile processors, but it does provide very good performance, especially for the price tag on the laptop. The two gigabytes of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory is pretty much normal for a system like the Vostro 1310 and allows it to run the Vista operating system without much issue.

eMachines has always been about the value segment of the PC market. The company stays true to that reputation with its new EL1200-05w, a $298 (list) budget PC for the mass market. This is a cheap PC for the computer user who needs two things: Windows compatibility (for older programs that won’t place too great a demand on the system) and Web access. Try to do any complicated tasks with it and you’re bound to run into trouble. The EL1200 is not terrible by any means, but it proves the axiom that you get what you pay for. And you’d be paying for it at Wal-Mart, as they’re the exclusive seller.

An ultraportable is designed to be carried, and it’s disappointing that the VAIO VGN-TZ11XN/B lacks a solid clasp to hold its screen and keyboard sections together. The hinge works well enough when the system is on a desk, but in a travel bag the two sections could easily get prised apart if the notebook is not stored in its own slip case.

Like the keyboard on X505VP, the keyboard on the TZ is surprisingly good, despite its unconventional design. The keys are all well separated and spaced, and there’s a discernable amount of travel when striking each key. I had no problem sitting down at the TZ11MN and typing at full pelt, but then I do have pretty small hands. That said, I think that someone with particularly big hands probably won’t be looking at a notebook this small in the first place, regardless of keyboard design.

Sony builds a 0.3-megapixel webcam into the top of the bezel, and the TZ11 increases its potential as a machine for both work and play with a selection of media-control buttons on the front of the chassis. There are twin memory card readers on the opposite side, which are compatible with Memory Sticks and SD cards.

In the grand scheme of things this is not a powerful laptop computer, especially at the price: it packs a low-voltage processor, memory is a perfunctory 1GB (expandable to 2GB) and graphics are of the built-in, memory-sharing Intel type. Vista rates the TZ11 as a two out of ten in the performance stakes and none of the stats top 4.5.

The HP also provides a wide array of internal expansion options. You can add a secondary hard drive as well as an extra portable hard drive through the front bay. You can also put in a third-party video card or add two 1x PCI Express cards to your system. You can also squeeze in another PCI slot if you gut the inside and pull out the 56k modem. It’s possible to increase the 4GB of RAM, but be prepared to sacrifice at least one gigabyte for future upgrades–all four slots are already filled with 1GB sticks.
