The F6V from Asus revolutionizes the way you get your entertainment on the go. Plus it has features to increase your privacy and productivity. The 13.3″ screen has Splendid video technology with 5 modes and 3 skin tone settings to optimize the image depending on what you are viewing.

The fingerprint reader reads your true fingerprint from the live layers of skin so you don’t have to worry if you have a scratch or other injury. Boot and HDD passwords offer additional security, and Trusted Platform Module V1.2 helps keep passwords safe.

All of this functionality is great, but useless in isolation. So there’s a plethora of connection options, both wired and wireless. Circling the shell are 4xUSB, 1xFireWire, 1xRJ-11, 1xGigabit Ethernet, 1xHDMI and more. Wireless connectivity includes 802.11a/g/n and Bluetooth.

The compact chassis is available in a choice of four artwork designs and colour schemes. All are great looking and bring a touch of style to the often staid laptop market. Its 2.2kg weight and 233-minute battery life provide fantastic mobility for regular travel use.

Each design also includes a unique scent. However, our review unit smelled no different to any other laptop, so we can’t comment on the fragrance. Definitely try before you buy to make sure you like the way your new laptop smells.

The design of the keyboard is pretty good and it’s nice to have a large “Enter” key but when you start typing with it the keys they feel a bit insecure at times. Each key that is depressed makes some sort of rattling noise and so it is quite hard to be discrete when typing in public places like the library. The good thing about this keyboard is that the keys themselves don’t really get sticky when you type with sweaty fingers, the same thing goes for the palm rest when you rest your wrists on them. Speaking of palm rests ASUS has a bad habit putting stickers all over this area and makes the notebook look like it’s still sitting in the shop window.

The built-in ATI Mobility Radeon HD3470 graphics processor returned a 3DMark06 score of 1697, which means that games newer than F.E.A.R. will not run smoothly if you don’t use the lowest settings — if they run at all. Storage is provided by a 250GB hard drive that spins at 5400rpm.

The sides of the F6V are adorned with an impressive array of expansion ports. Apart from the usual USB 2.0 ports (it has three), there is also a D-Sub port, HDMI-output and an e-SATA port. An ExpressCard/34 slot and a 4-in-1 card reader (SD, MMC, MS, MSPro) can be found on the left side of the chassis.

We’ll be able to tell you more once we’ve run full benchmarks for our full review, but our first impressions are that the F6V won’t cause any major dramas when it comes to daily desktop tasks.

Despite the disparity we’ve seen between 2GB Vista systems and 1GB XP systems, the Core 2 Duo in our review unit meant we didn’t suffer the same lag we’ve encountered on several Vista Atom system. The F6V was responsive, and coped with basic loads including running several browser tabs while playing a movie in Windows Media Player.
