At just $549.99, Gateway’s GT5692 is priced well within the reach of most anyone in the market for an inexpensive desktop PC. With a three-core 2.1GHz Phenom X3 8450 processor and 4GB of DDR2 RAM, the machine is decently outfitted for a system in this price range, and it finished ahead of most of the competitors in our recent roundup of under-$750 desktops. In our benchmark tests, it kept up nicely (for the most part) with the HP Pavilion a6560f, doing ever-so-slightly better in the Cinebench 10 rendering trial (5,040 vs. 4,789) and ever-so-slightly worse in everything else.

The Gateway falls behind the Dell on our other tests where CPU speed and the number of cores have a bigger impact, so 64-bit is by no means a cure-all, but for photo editors, the GT5692 is a strong bargain. Gateway provides a standard one-year limited warranty that protects this system with 24-hour e-mail and phone technical support as well as a limited return-exchange program.
