The Aspire AS9800 is powered by the high end Intel Core Duo T2600. This is one of the most powerful of Intel’s mobile processors currently available on the market. It is a dual core processor that allows the system to perform very well with multiple applications on the desktop at the same time. It is very much a desktop equivalent processor in a mobile platform. About the only drawback with it is the lack of the 64-bit extensions to support the Windows Vitsa 64-bit edition.

Most notebook computer system come standard with 1GB of ram that is sufficient to run most applications. Acer loads the Aspire AS9800 with a full 2GB of memory that allows it to run smoothly in memory intensive applications. Acer also uses the faster PC2-5300 DDR2 memory to better match up with the bus speed of the Core Duo processor.

The Acer Aspire 9800 is one supersize laptop. Weighing 17.3 pounds (without its AC adapter) and featuring a 20.1-inch display, it sounds ridiculous to call the computer a laptop. Yet there it is: a screen hinged to a keyboard deck, like any other laptop–except a lot bigger. We’ve seen large laptops before, and they all have some feature that sets them apart in the portable realm: the 19-inch Eurocom M590K Emperor boasts two graphics cards, while the 20-inch Dell XPS M2010 has a detachable Bluetooth keyboard and a handy travel handle.

Size matters. No matter what anyone says, size plays a very important part in our buying decisions, often at two totally opposite ends of the spectrum. When it comes to MP3 players or mobile phones, we generally look for the smallest devices we can find, that will slip unobtrusively into our pocket. When it comes to televisions (especially with the World Cup looming), it’s the bigger the better, with so many of us squeezing huge screens into rooms that really can’t accommodate them.
