The fastest iMac ever, the 24-inch iMac provides professional performance along with the convenience of an all-in-one design. Like its 17-inch and 20-inch siblings, it features the new 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The new processor delivers up to 50% more performance than the previous 20-inch iMac. It also doubles the amount of L2 cache, the twin cores sharing 4MB between them. The result? Turbocharged performance, making it easier — and more fun — than ever to work with digital photos, movies, music, and the web.

Innovative design: How did the designers and engineers at Apple fit a computer into the space of a compact monitor? Inside this graceful package, you’ll find a powerful 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, nVIDIA GeForce graphics, an 8x SuperDrive, integrated wireless-G and Bluetooth. They even found room for an iSight camera. Simply amazing.

Dual-core performance: A single chip that consists of two processors, the Intel Core 2 Duo processor gives iMac up to 50% faster performance than it had previously. The advanced Core 2 Duo teams up with some equally advanced system architecture. The 4MB of shared L2 cache, for example, really lets this iMac fire on all cylinders.

Enjoy the view: The spacious 24-inch, WUXGA (1920 by 1200 pixel) screen features a 16:10 aspect ratio so you can view DVD movies in their original widescreen format. The gorgeous display is 30% larger and a full 40% brighter than the 20-inch model.

The highlight of the 24-inch iMac really is the size of its screen, but the new Core 2 Duo chip is a close second. Twenty-four inches is a noticeably large amount of screen real estate, much more dramatic-looking than even a 21-inch display. Apple also amped the brightness. We looked at the 24-inch model side by side next to a 17-inch Core 2 Duo iMac (with the old brightness level) and the higher-end screen’s image gleams.

The 24-inch iMac also has an upgraded sound system, with a 24-watt digital amplifier (twice that of the other models) to power the built-in stereo speakers. The sound was much louder than on any other iMac I’ve used—useful for, say, watching a movie from across the room—and it had fairly good quality. (Audiophiles will still probably want a separate set of powered computer speakers or want to connect the iMac’s digital audio output to a good home-theater system.)
