The HP Compaq 2230s sports a clean black design. It resembles the black Vostro range and sports an almost black plastic body. It contributes a lot to the business look of the notebook. At dimensions of 13.3 x 9.7 x 1.21 inches, it is compact and portable. It weighs just about 1.8 kgs which adds to the portability factor. It is one of the most compact 12.1 inch notebooks. The Part of it can be attributed to the all plastic body. The notebook is totally black inside out – the exterior, keyboard, interiors, touchpad etc. Too much plastic somewhat degrades the build quality slightly. There is too much flex on the body, the diplay, the palm rest area. They should have chosen a partly metallic chassis to make it sturdier. The build quality feels cheap and non durable. The design is good with the all black look and rounded edges.

The glossy WXGA display on the HP Compaq 2230s is pretty nice, with vibrant colors and high contrast. Black levels are average with some grey apparent in dark settings depending on the angle you are viewing the panel. Vertical viewing angles are adequate for regular day-to-day use, but colors invert when outside of the 10-15 degree up or down sweet spot. Horizontal viewing angles are better, keeping colors true even to the very edge of being able to still see the screen from the side of the notebook. Brightness levels are above average, enough to comfortably view the screen in a bright office setting. Using the notebook outside would be limited with the glossy display because of reflections, but should be fine as long as you are under shade.

Granted – the Core 2 Duo T5670 1.8GHz CPU installed is not the cream of the first-gen crop, offering an 800MHz FSB (front side bus) and a mere 2MB L2 cache, but this petite 1.73kg model, with its 12.1in screen, isn’t really aimed at those who need a workhorse. In fact, it only offers 1GB of pre-installed DDR2 RAM, so the emphasis here definitely rests on price, not performance. Also included in the Centrino package is Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.0+ has been thrown in, too
