The 15-inch dv5t special edition is available starting at $949 and is decorated with the HP Renewal Imprint Finish, a design HP says is “inspired by new leaves on branches symbolizing rejuvenation and growth.” The Intel based dv5tse is available direct from HP and can be customized to order with a Blu-ray drive and up to a 400GB hard drive.

The feature set is probably among the best in the industry. As with other Pavilions, the dv5t comes with four USB ports—one of which is an eSATA/USB combo port. eSATA is an alternative interface for connecting an external device such as a hard drive, and it’s four times as fast as USB 2.0! Although this particular dv5t configuration doesn’t come with a Blu-ray burner, one can be added for $400. An option for a high-definition drive explains why an HDMI-out port, which lets you stream digital content to a larger display, is a standard feature. The rest of the goodies—the 1.3-megapixel webcam, a FireWire port, and 5-in-1 card reader—are what you’d expect from a Pavilion laptop.

With the introduction of the HP Pavilion dv5 series notebooks, HP is finally offering high-resolution displays. The dv5t is currently offered with a WXGA or WSXGA+ resolution. The WXGA screen (1280 x 800 resolution) is what most 15.4-inch notebooks in stores have, and the most common resolution on 15.4-inch notebooks. The WSXGA+ display (1680 x 1050 resolution) is what my notebook has. It has 42% more viewable space than the WXGA display, which is the reason I chose it. Higher-resolution screens allow you to see more and scroll less. For example, if I view a large web page, I could see 42% more content on the WSXGA+ display than on the WXGA display.

Along the front are two headphone and one mic jack, and on the right, you’ll find the DVD burner (You can also upgrade the optical drive to a Blu-ray player for $200), two USB ports, a modem jack, and a Kensington lock. You’ll also find a fingerprint reader on the keyboard deck.
