Watching a high-definition version of Apollo 13 was a blast on this system. Colors were bright and life-like on the Ultra BrightView panel, and the 1680 x 1050-pixel display delivered a high level of detail without compromising the smoothness of action sequences. The screen is not true 1080p resolution, but HP plans to offer a 1920 x 1200-pixel display that meets that higher standard shortly after launch. Sound was more than adequate to fill our labs. In addition to the four Altec Lansing speakers, HP also includes an integrated HP Triple Bass Reflex Subwoofer and integrated amplifiers, which combine with the screen to provide a truly immersive audio-visual experience.

That screen, which is HD-ready up to a resolution of 1080p by the way, is backed up with a HDTV tuner and an optional HD DVD drive. Blu-ray fans will be disappointed however as there’s no option for Sony’s format currently. When asking a number of HP representatives around the show floor it seems the overall opinion is HD DVD is more consumer friendly and a cheaper option, however HP hasn’t ruled out including a Blu-ray drive later on if the demand becomes apparent.

Built on Intel’s latest Centrino platform (code-named “Santa Rosa”), our review unit came with a new 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo T7700, as well as 802.11a/g/n wireless connectivity, which boosts throughput dramatically when paired with a Draft N router. Instead of Santa Rosa’s improved integrated graphics, the HDX opts for the even-better ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB of dedicated memory. Our HDX also came with 4GB of RAM (the full amount the motherboard can accept) and twin 7,200rpm 100GB hard drives.
