The Vaio JS190J starts at $999, but the Blu-ray drive and other upgrades kick the price of our review unit up to $1,499. We’re happy that someone is finally offering a sub-$1,000 all-in-one PC, but we also think our review unit is perhaps the best deal going in all-in-one PCs. You’ll find the Vaio JS190 in black, silver, and light pink variants, and the box also includes a wired mouse and keyboard set, but no remote control.

The desktop has a 20″ LCD TFT display which has a resolution of 1680 x 1050. The display is crisp and clear. A higher screen with full D resolution would have been ideal for watching HD movies using the Blu-ray drive. There isn’t an option for connecting external video display too, which is utterly disappointing. On the networking front, Sony has included wireless-N capability also. Gigabit Ethernet and Bluetooth are the other two networking options.

Another nitpick is the issue of crapware—trial software that system manufacturers load on their PCs. Like the other current-generation Sony desktops, the JS190J/B is vastly improved in this regard over earlier-generation Sony VAIO PCs. (Most consumer PC manufacturers include crapware, but Sony in the past was one of the biggest offenders.) This isn’t to say that Sony has completely eliminated crapware: There’s still the sales pitch for AOL and Windows Live OneCare when you start up the PC, as well as the Office 60-day trial. Windows Live OneCare has replaced Norton’s Internet Security for antivirus and firewall duties, but it’s still a short 90-day trial, not the 12 to 15 months I’d like to see on all consumer retail PCs.
